Heating the Whole House, Not Just One Room
Down on the coast, a wood heater is often a cosy extra. Up here, it's often doing the heavy lifting. Hinterland homes tend to be bigger, with high ceilings and open living areas. Winters on the ridge are colder and damper too.
Get it right and a slow combustion heater keeps the place comfortable from dinner to breakfast. Get it wrong and you're stuck feeding a fire that never quite keeps up. That's why sizing comes first in all our woodfire installations up here.
Sizing a Wood Heater for a Hinterland Home
Size matters more than most people think. Too small and it runs flat out all night. Too big and you'll keep it turned right down, where it smoulders, smokes and wastes wood.
When we size a heater, we look at:
The space: How much floor area it needs to warm, and whether rooms are open or closed off.
Ceiling height: High and raked ceilings hold a lot of air to heat.
Insulation and glass: Big windows and draughty older homes lose heat faster.
Where you are: A spot exposed to wind on the ridge needs more grunt than a sheltered gully.
How you live: All-day heating or evenings only? It changes what suits you.
Then we recommend a heater that fits your home, not the biggest one going.
Burning Your Own Timber
Plenty of Red Hill properties come with their own firewood supply. That's a real bonus, as long as the wood is properly dry.
Wet wood gives less heat and more smoke. It also coats the flue with creosote, which can lead to a chimney fire. A few habits keep you safe and warm.
Split it early: Smaller pieces dry much faster than whole rounds.
Stack it right: Off the ground, under cover, with air moving through the sides.
Give it time: Freshly cut timber often needs a year or more to season properly.
Check it: A cheap moisture meter takes the guesswork out.
Skip the nasties:
Leave out painted or treated timber, like old fence palings.
And have your flue checked and cleaned regularly, especially if the heater runs most of winter.
Wood Heater or LPG Gas Heater?
Without mains gas, it often comes down to wood or LPG. Here's how they stack up for a hinterland home.
Wood Heater
Running costs: Very low if you have your own timber.
In a blackout: A standard wood heater keeps making heat without power.
The catch: Splitting, stacking and carrying wood, plus cleaning out the ash.
LPG Gas Heater
Convenience: Heat at the push of a button, often with a timer or thermostat.
Fuel: It runs on your LPG bottles, so keep an eye on deliveries over winter.
The catch: Most models need power for their fans and controls.
Lots of people end up with both. Wood for long evenings, LPG for quick heat on a frosty morning. We install both, so we can set you up either way.

Bushfire Country: Check Your BAL First
Parts of the hinterland are bushfire-prone. If your property has a Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) rating, the flue and roof flashing must suit it.
It's worth knowing before anyone cuts into the roof. Your BAL is usually in your building permit documents or bushfire assessment. Not sure? We'll tell you what to look for, then choose a flue and flashing kit to match
Around the house, keep gutters clear near the flue and store firewood away from the walls.

Wood Heater & Fireplace Installation Red Hill

Explore clear and concise answers to the questions you care about most.
What size wood heater do I need?
It depends on the space, ceiling height, insulation and how exposed your home is. We look at all of it and recommend a heater that suits. Bigger isn't always better.
Can one wood heater heat my whole house?
In an open-plan home, often yes. If your rooms are closed off, the far ends may still need extra heating. We'll give you an honest view on site.
Will my wood heater work in a blackout?
A standard wood heater doesn't need power to make heat. If yours has a fan, the fan stops, but the fire keeps warming the room.
Do you install LPG gas heaters in Red Hill?
Yes. Our licensed gas fitters install and service LPG heaters, and connect them to your bottles
How do I know my firewood is dry enough?
Dry wood feels lighter, often has cracks in the ends and sounds hollow when two pieces knock together. A moisture meter gives you a definite answer
Does a bushfire rating affect my wood heater install?
It can. If your property has a BAL rating, the flue and roof flashing must suit it. Check your BAL before the install starts.
Ready to Heat the Whole House?
Let us know how big your place is and how cold it gets up your way. We'll size your heater properly and quote you upfront to install it.
